Too bad Karl doesn't seem to know/remember much about 9938 and nothing at all about 9958 (but that one was probably 100% Yamaha). Still cool that someone explicitly asks about it, though |

if one read carefully, a thing become clear: Karl thinks that hw sprites are too much limited and go for the today approach: assisted hw bitblit of sw made sprites directly in the frame buffer...

I agree. I also think that a kind of licence was obtained from TI when developing V99x8. There are copyrights and patent issues if some producer make un-authorized clone of a original chip.
To take an example: there was a MOS 65xx processor taken away from the market by mos because it was pin compatibile with motorola one. (The 6800) Even with only hw compatibility (opcodes were different) motorola did not like mos chip and forced the latter to not sell it...
I think karl did not like to talk about the v99x8 chips. |

I was also intrigued that he asked about the Yamaha VDP's, which aren't that known, must have been an MSX:er
Yamaha being such a large player, there was probably a license for the original design and perhaps specific markets. I'm not surprised that Karl can't recall any of this, because this kind of business agreement wouldn't involve an R&D/engineering department. |

The 9938 was also used for some TI99/4a 80 columns extension, and the Myarc Geneva, which was an complete computer on extensioncard for the Peripheral box for the TI-99/4a. So, it doesn't have to be an MSX'er who asked that question...

It was also used as the graphic core of the Tatung Einstein 256 (prolly because its small brother, the Tatung Einstein TC-01, used the TMS9929). |

At first glance, it looked like the CeTec MPC-80.

well, atleast that is not a real picture, algo is not a real board-draw, just see de line-wires, and how the V9938 chip was just copy/pasted from another place, just seeing the space between pins |

Indeed, it's CG reconstruction of the real board, you can find original pics of the Geneve 9640 here. |
