Whohoo! I finally finished the Campaign part of Great Strategy II (Daisenryaku II).
What a great game this is!
Although I am glad that I could play it by emulator (a.o. waiting for the computer to make its move can be sped up).
Admitted, it was a three year campaign for me (I more or less only play in the holiday season), but at least I reached the end.

So therefore... I'm interested to hear from you about alternative strategy games that you believe are as good as Great Strategy II for another multi-year-holiday-project :-)

Well, Robot Wars II, Herzog and Daiva 5 are pretty cool, even if they may involve more realtime action.
Also, you could consider giving Akanbe Dragon a try. It's an interesting mix of chess with a lot of weird things.

Thanks JohnHassink.
I think of these I might enjoy Daiva 5 most. It seems more or less turn based and I vaguely recall trying this before. So I'll give it try!
I never heard about Robot Wars II and Akanbe Dragon before. The latter I can find on Generation MSX, but it does not directly appeal to me. Robot Wars I can also find online, but Robot Wars II I cannot really find.

Indeed John, what is Robot Wars (II or any other)?

Perhaps you mean this: http://www.generation-msx.nl/software/msx-magazine-jp/zowazo...
But I can't find a part II of it.

That was the one, Manuel. My disk of it said "Robot Wars II" and I just assumed it was the title.
You know how it went with wacky guessed titles from Japanese in those days. Smile

If you liked Daisenryaku II, try the Daisenryaku II Customer Kit or Super Daisenryaku.

Master of Monsters might also be interesting. Legend of Galactic Heroes 1 and 2 are also great. Daiva 5 is awesome. Schwartzschildt also looked interesting to me but haven't tried it much.

Thanks for the suggestions Randam!
There is quite some japanse going on with most of these, which is too big of a hurlde for me.
I actually couldn't find the Daisenryaku II Customer Kit anywhere.
It seems like it is sometimes also referred to as Custom Kit?
Well, if it similar to Daisenryaku II, but in Japanese, I guess I can manage.
And if it contains another campaign that would be very interesting indeed!
