If everything works as expected, I should go in Japan this fall. The plan is to spend some days in Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. Do somebody knows some good MSX-related shop I could pay a visit to? Sure, I could look it up by Google but I think you know better than me what I am looking for Tongue

Trip delayed to Xmast time due to job inconveniences. However, I do confirm that "Potato Shop" is still alive and kicking... even if a tad expensive Tongue

So, about a year ago, I came back from Japan with several MSX cartridges. For a whole set of reasons relating to both the fate and my stupidity, I managed to test them just this morning. Unfortunately, it seems that three of them are not working (Androginus, Gunfright, Space Mambow). When I stick one those in a slot and turn the computer on, I am thrown in the Basic environment. Am I doing something wrong or are the cartridge really broken? Ah, my computer is an NMS8280 with no modifications.

Cartridges and cartridge slots can get very picky about how they’re inserted. I think it is the result of oxidisation. For example, my Music Module makes all kinds of weird noises and refuses to boot if it isn’t inserted exactly right, and the old NMS 8250 computer we used to have was also always very finicky about how the cartridges were inserted.

Try re-inserting and shifting the cartridges (while the computer is off obviously), messing around a bit and having some perseverance will usually make it work in my experience.

For a little more permanent and reliable solution, try cleaning the connectors on both sides. You can use contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol with q-tips. For the computer side, a credit card + wet cloth seems to work pretty well.

In Kyoto, don't forget to visit the museum of manga, there's a huge Hinotori statue in there.

Every time I take vacations, I also take picture of things that remind me of MSX, these are collected here:

for the cartridges, you can use a pencil eraser on the contacts of the edge connector. softer and dryer is better. then you use a cloth or cotton swabs with isoprophyl alcohol.

for the MSX slot, you can use a sheet of paper: wrap a cartridge board and insert a few times on slot connector.

@Grauw, @tvalenca
Oh my, I should have thought of that before! You have no idea how much dirt there was on those connectors. Now everything works. Thank you for the precious reminder!

@ricbit
Being an half-way manga drawer, I will gladly pay a visit to the museum the next time I get to Japan. Thanks!
