Cipher is an RPG for MSX-2 created by RamonMSX with the 1992 RPG construction tool Dante 2 by MSX-Magazine/Ascii corporation. As you can see in the screenshots, the game is inspired by SD-Snatcher, Illusion City and other cyberpunk MSX-games. After the menus in Dante 2 got translated English, RamonMSX started experimenting with this great tool and created this start for an RPG. In his own words it does not pretend to be the best RPG ever created on MSX as he only started making it for his own enjoyment.

Unfortunately the RPG has never been finished, but it's available from the downloads database for your enjoyment. With the supplied user disk you can walk around in quite a few areas with save games. Anyone feels like finishing it? Here's your chance!

Some sweet graphics!

I remember seeing screenshots years ago. Nice that it’s released, despite its unfinished state!

Congratulations for the professional-level graphics. It's a pity that this has not been finished. As for Dante 2, the tool you're talking about, is it available somewhere hopefully with some documentation?

The Cipher download has all you need (just try the first disk Wink). As for documentation I only know of the Dante 2 course that was available on the FutureDisk. Unfortunately that course was in Dutch, but something like Google Translate might help a lot. I added this Dante 2 course to our downloads database.

Great news that Cipher is finally made available!
Cipher really shows what a skilled designer can do with Dante 2.
Too bad that I have never seen any other Dante 2 made RPGs.

Dante-2 really is a great tool for constructing RPG's. I had a lot of fun creating Cipher, but I'm sorry to say that I will never finish it myself. That is the reason it is available for download now. Maybe someone feels inspired and turn my work into an actual RPG.

@the_engineer: of course the sample game Legend of Lidorun was created. Aside from that a remake of hydlide 1 was also made in it. On Niconico I have seen a video of a dante 2 game iirc but there should be far more. Strangely enough I've found more pc88 dante RPGs people made than msx ones.

@ramonMSX: very much appreciated that you have left it available for download. Your work looks awesome!!! Too bad you will not finish it, but hopefully someone else might get inspired.

For those interested in Dante 2, the guide by Naramura is translated to English and can be found here. Also working on translating the guide from the Futuredisks to help people who are interested but don't know Dutch (first few are done).

They can be found here:

I am getting more and more interested to work on Cipher. at the off chance that @RamonMSX still sees this or someone knows how to contact him: was there a story outline for where it is now? Or is there some own notes about the game or Dante 2 in general?
