SANYO WAVY 35 - batteries

what are the batteries for in a WAVY 35 ?
I pulled out a SANYO PHC-35J (without fdd) and I don't know what use the 2 AA batteries are for...
Are they necessary for good working ?

Batteries in all MSX2 models are for the real time clock, which saves the time as well as some settings (e.g. which screen and width the MSX boots into). They are not necessary for normal operation.

Of course, sorry. I thought date and time only worked with MSX-DOS...that's a mistake.
Long time away from my MSX, I forgot a lot of things. Thanks.
