Given the current mass exodus from Twitter to mastodon, and the fact that the system is meant to be a networks of small communities, each with a shared interest, I was wondering if it is worth having a home for MSX fans. After all, picking the right server, and one that is not overcrowded is a challenge at the moment.

I have looked into the setting up an instance, and I think a 50$/month VM could handle the load of all active MSX community, so with 50 people donating 1$ a month, we could have this up and running.

Thoughts? Is there real interest or do I live in a bubble where all the people I follow are migrating?

Last reports I've seen, mastodon got 200.000 new subscribers. With over 200 million active daily Twitter users, we're talking about 0,1%...
And I wouldn't be surprised if most of them are just having a look and those accounts end up dead. A bit like what happened with WhatsApp & Telegram.
I for one wouldn't be interested in a mastodon account, let alone an MSX dedicated server.

I too have put Twitter in oblivion, but I didn't think of going to mastodon.

Is people actually leaving Twitter? All I have seen is people "tweeting about leaving twitter" and then staying around to see what do people respond. And a few days later, they continue with their regular tweeting Wink

Same happened with Whatsapp when some sensitive privacy changes were announced. Everybody fled to Signal and Telegram... Or did they?

Years ago, when Facebook would be using your personal photos for their own ads/marketing, I saw many FB-friends leave the place. Yet, when I look them up, they all have a FB-account again. The name of this phenomenon? People often have a fear of missing out.

So, yes, lots of people may be booing because Musk bought Twitter, vastly reducing the political agendas that were there. But in the end: it's all statements for being statements, and eventually no-one cares. We live in a virtual world of flashy statements without backbone, and all we experience are just the statements.

The moral of the story: don't put your whole life on social media, keep things mild and pointless, keep a distance so that no serious issue can directly hit you in the face.

@wolf_ it depends, I closed my FB/Instagram/Telegram accounts and switched to Twitter. Recently got banned on Twitter for hate speech towards russian war criminals. I have no social network account right now. And you know what? I feel much better now.

Yep... That does sound familiar. I closed my personal FB accout ages ago, and I only use FB/Twitter for my website. Not using "social" media and actually socialize with people makes life a lot more enjoyable. I only make an exception for LinkedIn as I use it for my job. But also no personal stuff there...

fomo is real, and visible every day. Think for yourself, to start with. I have a facebook account to get in touch with peeps like Wolf and other MSX users around the world. Although I hate messenger, it serves my needs. Twitter and wat nut.. I don't.

So, no, I'm not "in" for Mastodon (besides the band, which I dig totally), nor any other bullshit "social" media money making thingy out there. I don't have the fomo decease. I only SMED sometimes... oh, wait, that's another story.

I left facebook and I never had any regret. While I used that platform I ran a plugin called FB Purity in which I setup to hide everything that was not an original post. So no forwards and no likes and no shares and no pics of cats/kids/food. Turned out the ~100 "friends" I had had nothing much to say. Never missed it. Never been on twitter, not going to. Same goes for mastodon. I don't think social media has brought the world anything good.
