On May 29, 2023, after being in coma from a serious illness, Andrey Borisovich Rodionov died. Andrey was an active MSX veteran and electronic music composer. He died at the age of 69.
Russian citizen Andrey Rodionov was born in Moscow on June 3, 1954. He graduated from the Moscow Mathematical School No. 160 as a mathematician-programmer, from the Moscow Electrotechnical Institute of Communications (MEIS, now MTUCI) with a degree in radio engineering, and as a conductor of a variety orchestra from the Moscow Regional Music College. During his study, he worked at the laboratory of system programming at the Space Research Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences and at the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences as a software engineer. After graduation from the university as a senior researcher, he then headed the Information Systems Software Sector.
From 1979 to 1984 he was a keyboard player in the "Tin Soldiers" ensemble. In 1985, together with Boris Tikhomirov, he released the first domestic record, recorded using a personal computer called "Pulse-1", which was printed in over a million copies. Then he wrote the music for the "512 K Byte" CD, the first in the country to be made using fully computerized technology, including the cover design. His other works were also published at the Melodiya company, including the experimental disc "Personal Computer" with one of the author's computer games, recorded on vinyl along with his own comic song about personal computers. He wrote a lot of music for radio, television, theater and cinema.
His work was bright and original, in everything from music to computer games. His talent is multifaceted - Andrey was one of those people about whom it is said: a talented person is talented in everything
His computer games "Major Pistolov", "Return to Earth", "Danceroid" etc. (developed in 1988), together with author's software for creating games, were highly appreciated by the USSR Ministry of Culture and gained wide popularity on the MSX platform. He was in a hurry to live - in the last two years of his life, he did a tremendous job, re-released a collection of his MSX games for an English-speaking audience, radically updated and reworked them in many aspects, and also opened their source code.
We express our deepest condolences to the family, friends of the deceased. May you rest in peace, Andrey
