MSXdev'15 - Wing Warriors announced

So, just after the contest was officially kicked off, we can already give you some good news, as the first entry is announced. And quite a promising one, at that. Previously, we reported about an interesting looking vertical scrolling shooter in development, so there is that. Have a look at those new screenshots and tell us what you think!

Wow... the characters graphics are pure 8bits awesomeness, and the in-game ones are great too! If the gameplay is at the same level, that will be very hard to beat.

Wow indeed, it looks great. The screenshot with the arches reminds me of fire bird, maybe it's a little ode to this game

Looks great, but I want to ask this:
Why not a smooth vertical scroll? There's no graphic problem to do that and games with this feature on msx1 are not a lot.

But I find the black lines are too rough for this beauty gfx. Look at it fullscreen.

About pixelscroll. There are issues with doublebuffering running out of vram and needing special map tools that handle the combinations of neighbour tiles.
But a bitmap style copy can be done without these issues.
It would go around 10 fps. The numer looks low to action games, but is much higher fps than knightmare in 8 pixel scroll
sprites still can run fullspeed.

Bitmap style things were only done in spectrum port.
It didn't appear with MSX 16 color games because of colorsparcles.
When the TV beam hits and you updated the pattern byte but not the color byte, this makes the whole screen flash with ugly things. But when you first copy to e.g. 8 hidden chars and then update 8 bytes in the nametable to show them, then it goes without colorsparcles.

With a bitmap method the game can have more than 256 tiles, huge masses.

However, I know this is not easy like we can think, there are some smooth scroll example around, vertical scroll on msx1 is possible, but we have to consider the amount of other things to do, like moving sprites etc.

Wow I see that I posted a remark about the choppy scrolling in the previous newspost.. BUT for some reason I thought it was a MSX 2 game (where vertical scrolling is easier).

I withdraw that remark and would like to add: This looks good.. nice use of the MSX palette!
