The latest fMSX-Windows and fMSX-Linux MSX emulator fixes MIDI playback and recording as well as a bunch of Windows-specific fixes and improvements. This brings us to version 4.9 of the nestor of MSX emulators.

fMSX is a program that emulates MSX, MSX2, and MSX2+ computers. It runs on many different platforms including Windows, Android, Symbian, MacOS, Unix, MSDOS, AmigaOS, and more. The creator, Marat Fayzullin, known on MRC as user fms, started coding this emulator back in 1993, which makes it one of the oldest MSX emulators we know of. fMSX has seen quite a lot of updates since then and has been ported to many systems. It is still being developed, although not as actively as before because most features are pretty much complete now.

Here's the change list for this version:

  • Moved input settings to the "Input" menu in fMSX-Windows.
  • Added "Draw 65% Frames" option to fMSX-Windows.
  • Fixed screen updates after changing scaling algorithm in fMSX-Windows.
  • Fixed "Force 4:3 Screen" option in TEXT80 screen mode.
  • Fixed "Load MSXDOS2 ROM" option in fMSX-Windows.
  • Fixed "Hit MIDI Drums" option in fMSX-Windows.
  • Now computing MIDI volume by waveform analysis.
  • Corrected MIDI drums volume in AY8910 emulation.
  • Fixed MIDI keyboard click in fMSX-Windows.

"the nestor of MSX emulators"?

What that means?

The Nestor is the oldest member in a group. Like, in parliament it's the politician with most years of service.

Wasn't the CJS emulator the first, by the way? Then fMSX, then MSX4PC? Is that right?

Hmm, Marat writes "I started developing fMSX in 1993 when there were only two other MSX emulators available, both exclusively for MSDOS.". I don't know which these were... I think CJS is from 1994. Although it seems it is already mentioned in MCCM 64, of Dec. 93/Jan. 94. Perhaps the first version was from 1993 then.

IIRC, I started using CJS in the beginning of 1994. Some months later I started using fMSX with version 0.7 or 0.8 If I'm not mistaken. fMSX may not be the first MSX emulator, but I believe it was the first MSX2 emulator, and introduced the .dsk disk image format.

I stand corrected. I was already using fmsx in 1993. But I'm sure I started using CJS emulator before fMSX.
