Martos has scanned, PDF-ed and released 50 editions of the Japanese ASCII MSX Magazine, starting with Magazine 6 of 1988 and ending with the summer of 1992. Initially this collection was only available on DVD during RetroMadrid 2012, but now this complete and interesting archive - even for those who don't understand a single character of Japanese - is available right here on MediaFire.

As MSX was still very much alive and kicking in Japan these years, the archive contains an interesting insight in which games were under development at the time and how they were promoted. The Spanish MSX community blog Konamito already dove into this extensive archive and published his interesting finds in this blog post. His finds include mentions of unreleased games such as A1 Grand Prix, Playball II and yes, even Sim City.

According to Konamito, Martos is already working of scanning all the MSX Magazines from 1983 to 06-1988, in order to complete the archive. We are very curious to find out what your interesting finds are, so please let us know in the comments!

Wow! This is great! What a wonderful way to preserve this. This must have taken awhile for Martos to scan all of these. It took awhile to download each one (unless you are a premium / pro account subscriber for MediaFire. So I thought of something better to help out with this effort. I decided why not just host them outright in archived zip files for each year for easier downloading. When the others are ready, if Snout and Martos do not mind, I'll add those to the list of hosted files. This should make it easier to distribute.

MSX Magazine Archive

No worries about bandwidth. The server I pay for each month should be able to handle it. : ) I'll host these indefinitely unless I hear otherwise that a collection of these magazines is still being sold or distributed by the original publisher, then I'm afraid I would have to take the link down.

I'd be interested in seeing a similar treatment to other MSX magazines such as MSX Fan. : ) I've got a few of them, mainly just the Xak / Fray cover versions, but not too much time on hand to scan everything like you all have.

Yeah well, there's still a difference between a PDF and a physical magazine.. In this case, you've spent the money on owning a real and physical copy.

Are you REAL?

$20 bucks for REAL printed stuff was pretty cheap.

Looking at:
MSX Magazine 1991 01 - MSX software catalog 91.pdf

MSX got indeed few (34 listed there) sexy titles. I don't remember playing any of them still.

PS: No wonder! All them were for MSX2 and up. At that time I had MSX1 only.

Gradius2,
are you serious? In these days we cannot buy even one issue of a printed version with $20. this news is about the distribution of pdf files. I wonder what makes you think so?

you are so rude. if you misunderstand what other people are saying, do you tell like that? drunk, huh? by the way, for my first reply, our discussion context for this news was definitely the pdf files, not printed magazines. Misunderstanding is free, but practice good manners toward others.

janghang is pretty crazy, really.

You should improve your english as well, as you didn't really knows what the others are talking about.

This has nothing to do with rude or not, and if so I really don't care, since is you didn't understand at all.

And yes, I'll not feed the troll again. Tongue

Do improve it well yourself! I keep asking why you think so from my original reply. That's what I asked this mentally challenged guy. it is too easy. if someone asks "why do you think so?", answer like this: "you are drunk", "you are crazy", and "you don't understand".

In this time, this crazy guy brought "the others". Anybody let me know what "the others" are talking about? My english ability doesn't allow me to figure that out.

Gradius2, stop smoking crack.

I just grumbled on this to myself. Actually my money is really nothing to his effort, time and contribution to this great project. I never complain about this free distribution. I always appreciate Martos' effort and his great project. Thank you so much, Martos!

As far as I understand, janghang "complained" about he bought the scanned magazines on DVD some weeks ago and now they are free. He doesn't say he bought about 50 real magazines for 20$ (!?). So he is not comparing a PDF with a real magazine. That's what I understand reading his posts.

Thanks, Guillian. Yes, your understanding is correct. I have never mentioned about paper magazines nor tried to compare them with pdf.

I didn't have intention of "complaining" something and I just a little bit regret myself about missing a free chance (it's like missing free lunch! LOL! ) as you can see my emoticon is crying on the first reply. If it sounds complaining, I would like to apology to Martos. He is a great man.

Looks like these are scanned by Konamito (http://www.msxblog.es/)! There’s many other nice scans on his site too, such as Hnostar magazine and lots of MSX books. Many thanks!

It seems the MSX Magazines were added recently; there’s no post on the blog about it yet, and also no pdf download link.
