MSX image compression suite BARGAIN has received yet another series of optimizations. The changelog since we last reported about this utility:

  • Changed drive select hotkey from SELECT to TAB
  • Scraped 5 more bytes off the assemble (de)compression routine
  • Compression now shows space savings (with a minus sign) instead of compression ratio

For those interested in the difference between compression ratio and space savings, this wiki might come in handy.

I'm trying to understand the encoder. Unfortunately I can't make heads or tails from the description. I can't even display the file with properly aligned diagrams.

Well, the developer tends to read posts about BARGAIN here, so he might reply. What I'm curious about is: how does Bargain compare to other compression routines for MSX?

For graphics it beats everything I have tested.

Wow! In compression rate, (decompression) speed or both?

In compression rate. Speed is a bit harder to compare since this one decompresses from VRAM to VRAM.

There are some nifty benchmarks on the compression ratio on this link.

Too sad I couldn't find any info on the file specs. It seems to be a great file format, but definitely hard to try to code a PC compatible converter just by looking at the asm code with Japanese comments.

The website seems to be gone, so we can only rely on its Internet archived page.

Does anyone have a backup of the sample image disks? They are not available at the Internet Archive.

BARGAIN 14.24 is also available for download at Vector, but again without the sample disks.

Tks, PAC! Could you please attach them to this feature request on SourceForge? It will help Piotr to implement support on RECOIL.

I don't have Sourceforge account, you can download the 4 demonstration DSK
