After more than a month in the making, today msx.org user and Youtuber ckrtech posted a new video on his Youtube channel Displaced Gamers titled MSX Computers - Scrolling, Sprites, and Stereotypes.

A crash course in the four generations of MSX computers, with interesting deep-dives into scrolling, sprites, media, sound, homebrew and patches. Even MSX veterans may learn something new!

His goal in making this video about MSX is to dispel some of the stereotypes that many gamers, especially those that play the NES, falsely assume about the MSX family. It isn't meant to dive into the architecture of the systems, but to help showcase some key differences, mostly graphical abilities as well as some sound, across the MSX/MSX2/MSX2+/MSX turboR by mentioning the hardware changes through the generations and using games as examples.

Please enjoy this great video about our beloved system. Check out his other videos too, and like and subscribe!

Nice find, Grauw! It is a entertaining vid about the facts of our system. Vampire Killer, Metal Gear and bad scrolling are gone after watching this.

Thank you Grauw!, I want to watch it and if it is possible I will learn a lot about my favourite computer. The problem is that I am learning English and my current level is not as good as I would like, but nevermind, I will try my best.
Thank you!.

Great video! And I love all the dedication to Salamander being a top favourite of mine.
The only point I disagree with (and is not really the fault of the video maker) is calling the Salamander ripple weapon mod a "fix", implying that the game's original weapon is not behaving per the original design. I know that MSX's ripple behavior is different than the arcade behavior, but I think it was done like this intentionally. I back my theory with two points:
1. The manual clearly states that ripple doesn't sweep through multiple enemies.
2. Design-wise, sweeping ripple is very over-powered. It was given in Nemesis 2 as a timed perk (Vector) and I would guess if they wanted to really give the same in Salamander, they would have hidden it behind one of the upgrades like Meteo and Screw instead of offering it even before laser in the weapon slot order, as sweeping ripple is superior to laser IMO.

Just my 2 cents, and again.. thanks for the fantastic video! Smile

The Goemon sprite shown is exactly as it is in game. I modified the openMSX sprite viewer script for the purpose of this video to make it easier for Chris to inspect.

Using Psycho World and Metal Gear 2 as an example of OR colours instead of some other Goemon sprite… I think this makes for more varied footage.

Great video! Very informative, factually correct and pretty comprehensive. My only, very minor nitpick is that the example of OPL4 PCM sound was kinda underwhelming. Oh, and that in Final Fantasy it wasn't mentioned it also uses PSG, but I think that's not really important.

Awesome video. Learned a few things I didn't know, even though I did some programming on the MSX2 back in the day.
