MSXdev'13 #2 - SHMUP!

The MSXdev'13 competition was closed yesterday, so it's high time to have a look at the entries. We already reported about Gommy Medieval Defender, which was released about two weeks ago.

SHMUP by Imanok is a shoot'em-up with a twist: control two spaceships simultaneously and fight off the alien attack! You can switch between to formations (horizontal and vertical) and provided you collect 3 capsules your ships will fuse together, gaining in attack power.

Just wanted to say that I had a chance to sit down and play this over the weekend and I loved it! I really enjoyed the music and the ship switching mechanic (Reminds me of when you get a second fighter in Galaga!). The graphics look great too and the scrolling on the sides is very impressive too! I was able to get a "FUSION" mode during one playthrough and that is a hell of a lot of fun blasting enemies in that mode. It allowed me to finish off the first boss, but I died on the reversal escape sequence. I'm afraid I'm just no good at shooters! : (

Any cheat codes perhaps? : ) Hahaha.

Thx for the great game. Like Skywelse said, at first getting the second ship reminded me of Galaga but the game mechanics are much more elaborate than that. Also liked the top down mode. Not many games like that. And I love the challenge. Old school hard Smile

This kept me playing for a while yesterday, very addictive!
It looks pretty simple and also looks easy at first, I was having a fairly easy time going through the first level on my first attempt, right until I encountered the first boss. I love the fact that it quickly gets progressively harder after that.

Always having two ships at your disposal and the added Fusion system is a fresh take on the genre for a small game like this and a complex enough additional challenge to keep the game interesting for a while.

I also liked actually having to travel backwards to fight the counterattack.

Nice, consistent graphics, GREAT music.

I'd pay for a cartridge release. Wink

I have uploaded an updated version:

-Added a little inmunity time after getting the fusion and after getting new capsules while fused.
-Upgraded the FX player to the last version.
-Improved ending sequence.

When the replay routine for TTFM is ready and Imanok agrees on implementing it, I can't see why not. Wink
