MSX NBNO fair canceled?

MSX NBNO sent some sad news to the MSX Mailinglist today. They have announced that the two persons who were responsible for organizing the MSX NBNO fairs, held in Oss in January of each year, have decided not to organize new fairs in the future. This means that the annual MSX fairs in Oss will probably not be held anymore.

The annual 'new-years' fair of NBNO started as a small MSX user meeting, but especially the last three years the amount of visitors and standholders grew a lot, making it a very important and pleasant day for the Dutch MSX Community. The bad news means there are now two big MSX fairs in the Netherlands each year: the MSX fair in Bussum organized by TNI, which will be held on October 9th this year and the Computer Meeting in Tilburg organized by CGV Tilburg of which the following edition has not been confirmed as of yet.

It goes without saying that the annual MSX fair in Bussum has now become the most important MSX fair of the Netherlands, and with that one of the most important MSX meetings in the world, as it is now the only large-scale MSX-only event in the Netherlands. We strongly recommend the MSX fair in Bussum and hope you will all be there this year to have a look at the latest developments in the MSX community, to meet many active MSX users in person and to have a very pleasant day in general.

**Update**
At 21:45, a second MSX NBNO-posting was submitted to the MSX Mailinglist. In this message, another MSX NBNO-member states the previous MSX NBNO press release was a bit premature. MSX NBNO assures us they have not given up hope and that they are still in negotiation with the owner of the location where the previous fairs were held. After the summerholidays, MSX NBNO can tell us more about whether the Oss fair 2005 will take place or not.

Too bad! I never attended Oss (which is not exactly in my region), but when I did so in 2004, I was pleasantly surprised! (I guess it's was the "all together in one hall" concept that made it cosy)

It wasn't in my region either and I did go this year. Tilburg isn't in your region either and you did go there. It takes about the same time to travel to Oss as to travel to Tilburg... Only major advantage in Oss it was a less than 5 minutes walk from the station.

...and the fact that the location of Oss ruled. As an added bonus Oss was organized by people who know what MSX is about. Unfortunately, that can not be said about the CGV.

In Brasil ppl are travelling 900 km for a fair... I don't get it how dutch ppl complain about a mere 150 km at all!

Well it is not sad but tragic. However, the only thing you can read is that the organizers wanted to stop. It was known that they needed a new location.
If they will be able to find a location within Oss, we can always offer help ofcourse. Since MSX-NBNO dropped this message in the mailinglist and putted overhere by Snout, I am disappointed that they do it that way.
They do have all email-addresses to inform potential standholders for the next year. So a personal message would have been more polite.
But it seems that is normal to say goodbye by means of simple message

A curious situation: while the MSX community is growing, MSX fairs have less visitors year after year.
Have MSX websites (like the MRC and others) that keep informed continuously MSX users about latest news/developments something to do with this fact?

@Ivan
I don't think so...
Maybe the problem is more that these people are getting older, having famalies and jobs and so on, so that they have less and less time for their hobbies...
But, that's just a guess...

I think having less time become older etc are sure reasons for it.
But throughout the years the community grew indeed but became less active and putted all the work in hands of a few.
If everyone spend a hour to msx per day you could divide tghe situation would be a quite comofrtable.
Since MRC as well as Sunrise offer service by ordering products and offering news by web it is Ivan also a reason for not visiting a fair.
So, I say that the reasons of TFH and Ivan play a role and for many the most important. Only the die hards come.

I don't think that age, job, family,... is directly related with this. I know people that are 40+/50+ that have hobbies despite their age/situation.

Well, everybody can manage to find spare time for their hobbies. It's just a matter of priorities. Of course nobody can get all the spare time he wants, but we're talking about one to three saturdays a year here. If you want to visit an MSX fair in the Netherlands, you can. No exceptions Smile

This could turn into a huge discussion, but in my point of view, 'just getting older' and 'having a family' are two of the saddest reasons for less interest in your hobbies. I actually agree with tfh, but it's the worst thing that can happen to you. I'm living it at the moment, I see it happening around me constantly. Some of my friends already have THREE Senseo devices, they're watching the Euro football matches with mutual friends on beamers all the time while their women are enjoying themselves reading 'Esta' together and they all can get so incredible enthusiastic about their new home on that VINEX-location or the childrens playground they just bought at the Gamma and installed in their backgarden, together with their neighbours, of course. And when I sometimes ask them about the things they used to do and like, they just look at me as if they're seeing water burn and they conclude they're progressing in life and they suggest I should do the same. And it's of no use trying to wake them up. They're going down into eternal middleclass mentality and they just don't care.

So let return to the topic. Reasons for organizing of non organizing true, fine.
But how to get it back on the calendar. Is it just two persons who stop of what kind of reasons or is it more. I think it is the end of MSX NBNO totally.
Or they may respond otherwise. The magazine they have to be continued or not? If you stop , have at least the courage to say it ...

Saying it's the end of NBNO is just FUD! I'd expect better from you, Rob...

The original mailinglist email did not even say their wouldn't be an Oss fair at all anymore.
In fact it says "If you think the fair should stay, please respond!"

So they're certainly looking for alternatives. It's just the original organisers don't have the time to do it.

I remember talking to the organisers on this year's Oss, and they were trying to find a new location, and more importantly, trying to negotiate a cheap price. I'm sure that's pretty time consuming.

So any of you living in or near Oss know a place or a willing to find one and organise a fair in it?

I think we should at least let NBNO know there's a demand for the fair!

I react on what I have red overhere not about the mailing list.
It says( read above ) that the annual fairs will probably not be held anymore.
It could have been said in another way. Such as with the addition they are looking for an alternative. I donot find this at the newspost, sorry!
Fact is also that they leave readers from their magazine in doubt , if there comes a new year of subscription. And those two , holding a fair and launching a magazine are the basics of MSX NBNO.
The relevant link placed is a private page of Raymond where you cannot find the info placed on the mailinglist as well as on MRC.

So because MRC wrote this newspost in a bit too negative way, and there's no info on Raymond's webpage you conclude:I think it is the end of MSX NBNO totally.
??!

And about their magazine, they wrote in last issue that they were hoping to release an encore. So we can expect that to have information about a possible continuance of the magazine, and if not, then not!
I don't really see what the problem is, it's not like Futuredisk that collected subscription money and never delivered!

Guyver I never said that NBNO acts in the way Futuredisk did since they have made every magazine with pleasure and delivered it nicely.
Since I would regret that one of the latest magazines would disappear therefore my worries, that remain, however and the future will learn
But I am glad Latok says it's premature the reaction of MRC.

Sunrise, I didn't say the MRC reaction was premature. We based our newsposting on the information that was published by MSX NBNO on the MSX Mailinglist. MSX NBNO have ammended themselves through a second posting on 21:45.

Shall we conclude we'll just have to wait and see what'll happen after the summerholidays and go back to the Euro2004 final between Portugal and Greece? Thank you Smile

If I'm correct, the last issue of MSX NBNO's magazine XSW Magazine was released at the fair in Tilburg, 2004. Have a look at the report here on MRC to read some more about it.

It's a pity if the Oss fair would disappear, really. I never went there because initially it had the image of a 'small' fair and I had to come from afar as well, but this year I wanted to go but couldn't because of a family trip I could hardly cancel... I really would like to see what it's all about myself.

So MSX NBNO: if you consider not organizing the fair for another year, please postpone it only one year?? Please?? I promise I will be there in 2005 Wink

@Latok: Great reaction, your intial one about 'growing older' and 'getting a family' Big smileBig smile

@Rikusu: I don't know what you mean, but the MSX NBNO fair is always in january. So if you can be there in 2005 there's been no postponing at all!?!

@sjoerd: Fear-Uncertainty-Doubt. I agree with you about your intelligence level, because the first hit in GOOGLE explains it clearly.
