MSX Resource Center server migration

Today, we moved the MSX Resource Center to a brand new web server! As we speak DNS servers around the world are starting to point to the new server - a process that should be completed within the next 24 hours. As the database of the website has already been running from the new webserver for over a week, msx.org will keep up and running throughout the entire process. Ever since March 2005 the MSX Resource Center has been hosted on dedicated web servers and we have not looked back ever since. Every now and then, a little upgrade can do no harm though, so we shopped around and picked a nice new setup from Strato - the ISP that has has been providing our previous web server as well.

For those who are interested, a quick look into the upgrade:

• 2,5 GHz AMD Opteron 1381 Quad Core processor (was 2,0 GHz Opteron 1212HE Dual Core)
• 4GB main RAM (was 2GB)
• 2x500GB Storage in RAID-1 (was 2x250GB)
• Debian 5.0 x64 (was openSUSE 10.2)

With this new server we have also drastically updated the software running on the server and moved to recent versions of PHP and MySQL. It took Jorito quite some efforts to get the rusty old MRC 2k2 code up and running as there was quite some heavy use of now deprecated functions and settings. Although we have done our best to test the new server extensively, there might be some unexpected behavior due to all the upgrades. Should you find anything that does not work as you would expect, please contact us so that we can address the problem.

As you probably all know, the MSX Resource Center is funded by the consistent donations from the MSX Resource Center crew and by the voluntary donations from our visitors. A big thank you goes out to all the people who have donated to the MRC in the past - as these donations allow us to keep this website up and running.

Throughout the coming weeks we will still be finetuning the server for extra performance.
