Passion MSX2 contest - 1st edition closed

One year ago, Passion MSX started a contest that could be seen as the MSX2 version of MSXdev. With games to be delivered in ROM format, with manual and ROM label, it was almost identical to the recent MSXdev specifications. It was however a contest for MSX2, with 512KB ROM as a maximum. Following frequent discussions of the time, about the limitations of the MSXdev contest, this contest could've been the answer to all that, with dozens of developers finally being able to escape the MSX1 limits while still competing in a contest that looks quite similar.

One year has passed since then, without much attention being given to this contest, other than reminders in forums by people who try to redirect developers to this contest instead of boasting the specifications of MSXdev once more. While a few rumored entries passed the train station of Gossiptown, the contest eventually ended with only two entries. The first one was published soon after the deadline, the second entry was announced only hours after the first entry.

The first entry is called Shift, by contest-regulars Infinite. Shift is a variation of Bejeweled, one of the many match-3 games that roam the world of indie-gamedevelopers (and these games are in fact quite popular among middle-aged woman, according to statistics!). On the positive side: Infinite has made a deadline again(!), although a slight update of Shift is to be expected in the near future.

The second entry has come from TNI. A modest shooter with some elements from Aleste and a funny erotic theme around it. Music has been made for PSG, but uses extra FM voices when an FM-PAC/MSX-MUSIC is available.

Despite the low entry count, a second edition of this contest is knocking the door already. More on this when that announcement is official! Until then, have fun with the results of this edition: shifting Infinite's shiny balls and shooting with TNI's flying cock!

Nice game and a great variation on the bejeweled concept. Though it would have been nice if there was a key to give up when you are stuck. Now you have to wait till the time runs out.

Its sad to see that none of all of you that constantly complains about msxdev participated in this competition. Maybe put some more energy into coding instead of complaining next time Wink

On the positive side its nice to yet again see two great entries by Infinite and TNI. Good job and congratulations!

Two entries, just updated the text. Why the second entry was received *after* ours while it was sent *before* ours is a mystery.. Tongue

Shift is very nice! There are really not too many games made for SCREEN 8. I also like the musics.

Somehow I get a feeling, that Equivocal might have needed a bit more time. Smile2

Equivocal seems a good candidate to retrocrap (at least form the name and from the description, not tested yet)
Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

NYYRIKKI: It seems SHIFT needed some more time as well. Bifi just identified a crash bug which I should fix asap.

Surprising that those were the two only entries. I start a little over a month ago as a form of distraction from current projects. And Guyver800 started even later. I was soooo planning on beating RyJuZo by shifting in from of him in the rankings. Tongue

Ok tested Equivocal I can confirm my initial impression...
sorry, maybe with some more work it could improve a bit
but not so much...
even not considering the bugs, apart from the use of
screen 8, there is nothing innovative or interesting in it
(well I played 3 minutes, so i cannot be so sure that things
go better in other levels - if any ;-)

About Shift:
I'm pretty bad at this type of game, but I love the style and atmosphere!

Also, I really like the 'tempo rubato' slowdowns & acceleration of the in-game music.
Nice work!

One thing though, why does a certain theme remind me of the 'overworld' music from Silbiana?
Well, I know why. It's a funny coincidence. Wink
