Passion MSX2 contest 2 - Closed

A year ago, the second edition of the Passion MSX2 contest was announced soon after the first was concluded with two entries, Equivocal by TNI and Shift by Infinite. And so, a year later, the second edition has been closed, again with two entries, again by TNI and Infinite. More similarities can be found in the fact that the themes of both entries are based on criminality and jails.

Unless you've been living under a stone for the past time, the title of the TNI entry barely needs clarification; Joran van der Sloot, who keeps finding himself in situations where young women he meets just suddenly die and/or disappear, tries to escape from Miguel Castro Castro prison. It's the player's task to look through Joran's eyes and silently guide him to a way out.

The Infinite entry starts where TNI's entry ends. It is more of a road game, or a Pacman without pills, in which you are a criminal, who escaped his prison in order to flee to the North. Such a road trip is not without problems though, and of course the police would love to send you off course back to jail.

In Jailbreak you can get stuck between two "civil" cars going in opposite direction.
The police cars cannot reach you but you cannot move Crying

in The Adventures of Moron van der Slut there is no Exit spot in the map (IMHO it would help a lot to know what to look for)

Big smile "The Adventures of Moron van der Slut" Big smile
Even if it'd be bad karma to LOL about it - I just went ahead and totally did, hahaha!
I like the music at the intro screen; I'd have liked some sound during the game as well, but I'm happy with the fast pace of running through the maze.
It all goes very smooth.
Where are the "energy barriers designed to kill all living organisms" of which the manual speaks, though? Didn't I get far enough yet, or are the walls meant by that?

Jailbreak indeed seems like some hyper-evolution of High Way Star, as I was told by a coughing man in a raincoat a while ago. ;)
Also, I kind of had the feel of Les Flics but without the entering buildings, stealing stuff and stabbing people-part, hehe.
I find this game interesting & very good looking but it sure needs some practice (at least I do) in order to control perfectly. :)

DemonSeed: Joran's in-game radio broke just before the contest deadline, it made a TNI member type 'fuck' a couple of times close to midnight.

*edit* those energy barriers aren't there until about level 5

ARTRAG> If you encounter something like that again, please save me a screenshot. It should be impossible. If it happens, it means there are still some errors in the data. Apparently I did not eliminate them all as I hoped I had.

Hm, am I the only one for whom Jailbreak fails big time in BlueMSX due to (apparently) swapping pages?

Doesn't Jailbraik use SCC music? sounds kinda weird this way...

2 entries, oh well as long as they're good. Knowing Infinite, I prolly will be

psg-only this time.

I was a bit short on time in the last months due to study, but that was already obvious from the fact that I did less news in the last months and added Hydragon and DemonSeed to the crew to unload me a bit. That thankfully works, and while I keep tutoring them for the coming months, I think their enthousiasm is just what this place needed. I noticed a shout o'snout in our internal blok, a few days ago, so who knows, he may return to the news arena as well.

So, apart from the title screen and the city music, I did all the tunes last weekend in one or two days. The real obstacle with this contest is the deadline, it's right in the middle of exams and a project week @ my study.

I've spent more time on programming the integrated map+tile editor than on the whole game.. Tongue

ro is right. Could an awake mod please remove my e-mail from that post.

As for the bug. It's an interesting one. It's not a bug in the game. Just something I never thought of. I'm inclined to say that it's your job as a player to avoid that situation. Tongue

if only Yukio had entered with one of his In Jail games, then we'd have a trilogy! Wink
and no matter how bad the game, he'd have won at least 400 euros.

Definitely my vote goes to Jailbreak
Apart the dead lock I spotted, the game is very polished and addictive. Well done!

Yes, it would be a trilogy ... 400 bucks would be nice. But, to be fair it is like a still for some games.

Wow, the Moron van der Slut...man looks really awful. 3d mazes works better on Demos.
It was probably not Bifi's idea. Guyve's for sure. He also codes wearing a suit?

Congrats for the game Edwin. Really really nice.
On the next version, add a small 8x8 player that get's out of the car when you press enter. Pressing enter again, close to a car, would make the player steal the car.

Voillá, MSX, Grand Theft Auto!

That was my sincere opinion. Yesterday I downloaded both games. I was able to entertain me with Jailbreak. I even played it enough to pass level 1.
Moron it's quite unplayable for more than 2 minutes. It's like Amiga trying to imitate Wolfenstein 3d. We had Gloom and Alien Breed 3d, but they were both terrible. Of course, it should be difficult to code. That's way I suggested a demo.

IMHO muffie is too direct but actually right

The framerate is good but the game looks very bad and lacks of important elements (e.g. a goal spot - in the map at least!). I know the problem of dealing with textures in this kind of games, but if the framerate was the goal, maybe simpler textures, even flat colors, would have worked much better with some elements like:

0) add a starting spot and a goal spot as textures on walls: they can be also simple doors;
1) add some sort of variation on walls (even flat colors, if not textures, could work): this allows the player to keep track of where he/she is in the maze;
2) add some sort of shadowing: the same wall has to look darker or lighter according to the direction it faces;
3) do not use bricks if you cannot cope with them at closer distance: less detailed textures scale better when zoomed;

PS
some of the above things are also in this demo

Note that the two roms work only on real machines
The BLUEMSX (v. 2.8.2) and OPENMSX (v. 0.7.2) fail to correctlly emulate the right vdp timings, thus texture appear broken (keep space pressed to have flat walls)

[EDIT]
OPENMSX 0.8.0 seems fixed: well done to the openmsx team !!

I suspect he's talking about the doom-demo thing.

Although development has shown a few emulator bugs. The most serious one in bluemsx, causing blank line in the player sprite. Should be an easy fix though.

I can't recall someone fixing VDP timing during 0.8.0 development, but I may have forgotten about it Smile

well, ATM the "doom thing" works well only on openmsx.
Anyway IIRC I have stopped the development halfway while I was tuning some delay code in order avoid to wait the VDP CE bit.
It is possible that the roms show problems due to incomplete execution of commands even if the timing in the two emulators are very close but not equal.

Or.. how long does it take to judge two entries? An exact rating isn't even required.. just: "this game won". Question
