MSXPC - More than 100 sold

Topic: MSX Revival
Languages:

In a very short timespan (4 days after the announcement) more than 100 MSXPC's were sold in the ASCII MSX Store. With this, production of this limited edition PC is a fact. Contrary to our newsposts earlier, more MSXPC's will be produced. The MSXPC (20th anniversary edition) is a computer of which all components (Motherboard, harddisk, memory etc.) are fit into the keyboard. The machine comes with a ROM cartridge connector and runs MSXPLAYer. Apart from a unique serial number and an MSXPLAYer logo the full name of the person ordering the MSXPC will be printed on the machine. For more information on this MSXPC see this newspost. The sales of the MSX Game Readers are doing fine as well. At the moment 878 of these USB ROM cartridge readers were sold.

878 you call good ? Hmm if that are good sale numbers then I understand why Nokai claims very good sales numbers for the N-Gage

They need 3000 sold to take the MSXGR into production, so almost 900 sold in only 4 days (out of 60) is no bad result at all.

robertwilting, let's not compare apples and oranges here please. You're comparing a niche market product against a mass market product.

~900 sold in 4 days is remarkably good, it this rate keeps up they will sell 4 times their goal, so they'll be cheaper, and they will sell more if they're cheaper, and so on.

Well I don't know if the rate will keep up... Don't think so. But I have little doubt they will reach the 3000. Damn, guess I have to order one for myself aswell Smile. Yobi, er, I think they're accepting international orders aswell. But you'll just have to try, I guess.

I would have pre-ordered one MSX-GR if ASCII Store had translated their MSX page into English. Accepting international orders they reach 3000 units in few days.

COunter is at 973. Not mass market I don't understand.
First we get the news of the extreme good selling Magazines.
sorry but if the mags are selling that good then you can think of a mass market.
And next what we see is that some hardware is hardly sold.

I think we won't see anything more as MSX player and some magazines since looking at these numbers one chip MSX is to risky unless it can be really chip made out of standard components like the MSXPC. Still in that case it will be overpriced !

Is it so weird that if around 40000 magazines are sold, only one tenth of that amount of hardware readers will be sold? I actually think that is pretty much, one out of every ten magazine buyers is apparantly also interested in hardware (not the cheapest). And this is still mainly aimed at the 'retro'-people, who still have cartridges laying around and want to play them again, though still on a PC. I think a cheap small one-chip-msx will be of even more interest to people, and if they design a new portable 'msx-philosophy-based' system with the huge retro software base MSX has and the power and abilities to compete with current systems (not referring to desktop pc's), and lots of 'creativity' software... I think a lot more people will be interested in it.

But I think it's a bit naive to think that MSX Association would reach a place between names like 'Sony' and 'NEC' with solely an old system revival, an emulator and only their first steps in new hardware. But there's nothing wrong with starting 'small', is there? I think in the end it can grow pretty big. And even if they don't, if they can produce new interesting hardware like the MSXGR from a commercial perspective, they can count me in.

I've seen them in action on the large MSX fairs in Japan. There were several other initiatives of having a homecomputer-style keyboard-and-machine in one casing around that time. Still would not mind having something like that with a bit more modern specs.

E.g. something like the passively cooled Shuttle XS35GT series would be perfectly suitable for something like this. Add an SSD drive to keep things completely silent, optionally throw in a built-in gamereader or two for the fun of it and there you go! Smile
