Celebrating the 4th anniversary of the Gameboy Emulator for MSX, GEM, TNI released the first public version of GEMZ. GEMZ is a Gameboy emulator for MSX2/turboR running MSX-DOS2 with a LPE-Z380 and GFX9000 extension. If you are the lucky owner of these hardware extensions, you can get GEMZ on the GEM website, where you can also find all previous releases of GEM.

As far as we at the MSX Resource Center know, this is the very first piece of MSX Software ever to be released which requires the 32-bit Z380 processor. The LPE-Z380, a cartridge containing the Z380 processor, a BIOS and a 72pin SIMM memory socket has been created by Leonardo Padial, the GFX9000 is a video card, produced by Sunrise. The combination of both results in the highest speed an MSX can achieve at the moment. This speed, and most importantly: the 4 to 128MB of memory which can be used for dynamic recompilation, results in decent Gameboy Emulation speed on MSX.

AFAIK, the patent only applies to portable devices with a LCD screen. (So any portable device using e.g. OLED is safe from this patent).
Besides, there's prior art written all over this thing.. Still, getting the money to oppose their army of lawyers is tough.

So far this patent has been used to stop a commercial GBA emulator for the Tapwave Zodiac, a powerful handheld thingy.

Oh, and one last thing. This is a Software Patent that's only applicable to the USA. Luckily most countries in the world do not allow Software Patents, although there is a large lobby in the EU to get the implemented here to.

Please read http://swpat.ffii.org/index.en.html
and sign the petitions.

Software Patents are dangerous to the development of technology, while patents were brought into life to encourage the development of technology.

Congratulations, Patriek! Good job.
Unluckily I do not owe such hardware. Could you put on-line some images of the whole set running GEM?

I tought we wanted to avoid to use illigal roms

and by the way if you have copyrighted licened nintendo roms you R illigal already
Nintendo can sue you if they want if you have the original roms also its still illigal
its not only the pattent thats protecting the games.
there R still the game developpers who designed the games and they have rights to
why do you think its getting harder and harder to get your roms.

when i wanted to port the arcade versions of gradius i would have been illigal too

so continue your project

Hmmm.... MSX Resource Center has always reported about emulators. MSX emulators on PC, but also about Emulation software that runs on MSX (like GEM/GEMZ). Perhaps we'll change this policy in the future, but so far we have no reasons to do so. Same goes for reporting about translation projects. It's a grey area, especially when system ROMs are included or disk/ROM images are distributed instead of translation patches. However, MRC reporting about these things doesn't mean 'this is completely legal'. It just means we think it's interesting enough to report about, and we're fairly sure it won't get us in trouble. And, harsh as it may sound, that's where our responsibility ends.

I think someone here needs to learn about the law and his rights.
Furthermore, there's a huge amount of amateur software available for gameboy, which GEM ofcourse runs.
GEM is not bundled with any ROMs (neither public domain nor copyrighted) and is in itself completely legal, even under the most strict laws on earth.

bla bla bla, results in decent Gameboy Emulation speed on MSX.

In my eyes, that isn't an MSX anymore! That's a complete new machine! I'll stick to my PC with a perfect GB emulation and I don't even have to be a lucky owner of all kinds of hardware extensions!

I think GEMZ is not as SUPERB as everyone seems to think it is...

oh, and before everyone starts shouting at me, this is almost the same sort of reaction Guyver posted on the SjASM topic...

Sure it's an MSX! An upgraded one...
MSX turboR with R800, MSX-MUSIC and V9958 is a completely new machine compared to MSX1 (Z80, PSG, TMS9918) too.
And you know what the best thing is? Even a MSX1 can be upgraded with a Z380 and Gfx9000!

I think GEMZ is not as SUPERB as everyone seems to think it is...

You haven't even seen or tried it, and you're making such statements?

Oh, and before everyone starts shouting at me, this is almost the same sort of reaction Guyver posted on the SjASM topic...

Sorry, but it isn't. This is just you showing AGAIN you have no respect for me and for those actually trying to establish an upgraded MSX standard.

There's actually a MSX world outside of MRC, and my reaction to the SjASM post was done in context to that. Not in reply to any message posted on MRC.

Additionally, it seems like you posted this message just to provoke me and as some sort of 'payback' for my criticism on SjASM... Are you Sjoerd's knight in shining armour?
Sjoerd can take care of himself, he doesn't need a butt-monkey like you to defend him.

that you need more advanced hardware to emulate the GB doesn't make GEMZ less impressive. In contrary, GEMZ is quite amazing! Emulating the GB on a PC takes far more power! Unfortunately I won't be able to test GEMZ...

Emulating the GB on a PC takes far more power!

I disagree partially. In windows: of course! ...but in the old ages this would be possible with the same ammount of cpu power, especially since GEMZ doesn't support sound...

...but I do agree partially too Smile

GEMZ does support sound! You really have no clue what you're talking about, do you?

Even the fastest gameboy emulator for DOS, in handcoded assembly, requires alot more CPU power to be anything close to playable.

If it wasn't so pathetic, it would be funny to see how clueless you are...
