MSXdev10 - #7 Zombie Near

There are only a few days left before the deadline of the year, and no one can tell whether there will be a traditional last-minute rush of entries like in earlier editions. One thing we're sure of is that the seventh entry for MSXdev'10 is in: Zombie Near, submitted by a developer from Mexico, Óscar Toledo Gutiérrez.

In this brand new game, you walk your way through giant laboratories, killing zombies and saving scientists. Like the game classic Spy vs Spy, the game screen is half-sized and during 2-player mode there are two such half screens. This game, with great retro appeal, only requires minimal specifications: any MSX with 8KB RAM. It comes as a 128KB ROM, with manual and ROM label. Have fun shooting your daily dose o' zombies!

I like it!! I had time to try it only for few minutes, but the ingame graphics look like.... they made me wish I had this game in the ´80s! Smile I liked that ingame tune a lot!!! Smile And story tune too. Smile I thought you could open drawers (maybe to find some valuable information or pick up/rescue scientists´ papers/stuff for points or for some later use) that would made this game bird´s eye view shooting maze version of Impossible Mission! Smile But this game feels good as is too! Smile

But I am sad to say, that I found one thing (white sprite) I cannot pick up.... it looks like VERY dry white carrot... Wink or bare skeleton arm.... is it just a sprite based background?

I also thought that the sprites were objects to get. BTW, it´s a nice game, specially considering it was made by a single-man team. Smile

@lionelritchie: ...if I only could get it ready on time (and I really doubt it nowadays)... sigh... anyway, we are at the high MSX Xtreme rythm, we will keep it until the game is finished, but I really think it will be released out of the contest... anyway, this is pretty offtopic! (sorry)

Goin back to Zombie Near: just a fast test and I like this game, it looks really solid!! /me wanting to play it more to see if level design is catchy too. Way to go for the author, keep em coming!

I made another, this time longer, play at the later evening and found out that bone was a background. Smile

I played to somewhere after the first boss in Complex B and then quitted. I must say I "loved" that first boss, well, how much can one love such horrible creature?! Wink Maybe I can say I liked it a lot! Smile I didn´t find that black zombie too hard, maybe I could say that I wished there were lots more zombies in the beginning, acting just like black zombies. Smile Game feels too easy for me, but I guess it gets harder on later "stages".

If the both complexs have different map, then it´s a VERY nice touch!! Smile Though as I first read that Spy Vs Spy comparing, I thought that both players are in the same building. What if other player finishes her/his building first? Does she/he go to same building (from the opposite direction) where other player is or is her/his game over then, and other player must continue alone?

If I must compare this game to some other game, I must say that this is a bit simplified and slower (I think) "clone" of Alien Syndrome, minus the free eight-direction walking, as this has mutated monsters in laboratory (alien syndrome had space station laboratories with mutated monsters) and end bosses. But what I just have said, I don´t mean this is somehow poorer game, this is different game and has different way to play. Smile Nice game you have made!

I've played with my girlfriend. I get to the first boss but she died halfway Hannibal
Wish I had this quality level games back on the 80s!
Congratulations to Óscar!!

It looks good, but one suggestion I could make is: higher walking speed! I occasionally F9'd in openMSX to get some speed.

msx now.
now, to give more emotion to the playing, i turned off the lights, turn up the volume and screamed like a fag every time the first boss jumped in the sceen. great fun.

So is this Mexican coder, Óscar Toledo Gutiérrez, a familiar face in the MSX world, of is he a newcomer who liked to try out MSX for a change? Big smile

I like the game. It makes you feel like playing and old rom from the mid eighties... change that intro screen for the typical black screen with the big game logo and you've got it Smile

It has some issues with the player control (diagonals and so), but is fun to play. One of the most decent entries, for sure!
