We've just added a brand new MSX production to our ever growing MSX Freeware Downloads Database. The production comes with a little mistery, as its developer did not reveal his identity and would prefer it to remain anonymous. So, we can not tell you who made it, but we can tell you what he made: an oldschool PSG music demo with a nice slideshow for MSX1 and higher, called muZiX. As an interesting feature, the image quality improves when the demo is run on MSX2 or MSX2+.

Very cool! Very nice music and very nice graphics, especially the first one, I almost thought I was looking at it on a MSX2!

As the music is made by Dioniso, I think the coder is maybe also Spanish ... For example : MKII (ex-Matra coder)

Another option : the Dutch poke-1,170 guy .... this PSG music is really good for his radio music show

Something gives me the feeling this anonymous oldschool coder is Dutch. How many non-dutch people would greet Zett, for instance? (no offense, Rudi ;P)

I think he should name himself 'Zorro' from now on ^_^

p.s. I really like the way the demo works on MSX1, MSX2 and MSX2+... and as Vincent said, the GFX were really well-converted. Nice job.

Very cool PSG music! It does not sound PSG at all (and that it a good thing Smile ) I expetially liked the end scroll. Although it is made using just simple BASIC program, it still looks pretty cool and music is simply awesome!

I already took a little look and it seems, that those .PSG files are just PT3 files (ZX Spectrum Pro Tracker 3) with 7 byte extra header.

I also noticed, that there is an undocumented feature in the loader that makes it possible to select MSX type with 1 or 2. SELECT seems to be used for forcing to 50Hz mode.

BTW I just compiled PT3 loader for MSX-DOS. If someone is interested, drop me a mail.

Well, maybe it is better to wait for Vincent van Dam / Dioniso version. It feels quite a lame to practically copy&paste file load routine to beginning, compile the player and upload it.

I was anyway quite surpriced there was no binary with the sources. I think, that there is still about 50% of MSX users, who don't know how to do that in practice.

Wolf - Improvements in the downloads section, like screenshots and LZH/DSK, are on the todo list, but it takes quite a lot of spare time to prepare all ~600 files in the downloads section correctly. Again, your patience will be appreciated Wink

Indeedy would like to see it as a .dsk file too so I can listen to it in an emulator Smile I'm not so good at all this stuff (yeah yeah format a DD disk under XP with another program that supports DD then copy the files and put it in your msx...I know...but I haven't got one hooked up yet since I moved out recently and other excuses)

Yeah .dsk pleez anyone?

Um, lha.exe is easy to get... Most general archivers even support it, I guess.
Then use a tool like DiskManager (or simply wrdsk) to write them to a disk image. Voila, ready to use.

Snout: I think you could even script it to do this live on the server. (Using wrdsk (and lha if needed) e.g.).

No, the problem is more cultural. Common understanding among MSX users is that PSG is good for error beeps and MAYBE usefull to make drums to songs, but it is definately not made for music. For music we have FM-PAC. I don't know, is this good or bad thing, but at least it has caused MSX music to be different from other 8bit computers.

hehehe ehh depends on what your definitions of music are...try finding some richard devine and otto von schirach music and get back to me about what music is hehehe ! See, I think PSG can produce music too,it doesn't depend of how advanced the gear is,but how it is used...something basic can be more musical then say total annoying virtuoso crap with guitars (joe satriani,a lot of rock music with flying guitar solos)....take the model from kraftwerk, simple both in melody and sound yet says more to me then something horribly advanced Smile

Hi!

Yes, nice demo. It's the first time I read this news (sorry Vincent).

The songs were not created by any MSX Scener. All of them are Speccy made. The only problem I see is that the songs are played at 60hz in MSX2 or higher so the results are not exactly the same.

I would have played them all at 50hz anyway.

oh... for the people interested:

http://zoom.czweb.org/ay.htm

That page contains links to a windows AY player, the vortex tracker, and downloads of PT3 music archives; the website author's "favourites" archive also contains the songs used in the muzix demo.

If you have an MSX2 with v9958, like me, and want to see the screen 12 images, load MSX.BAS and then enter the following two lines:

30 IF PEEK(&H8000)=1 THEN EX$=".SC8":SC=8:CO=255 ELSE EX$=".SCC":SC=8:CO=248
65 FOR I=&H8400 TO &H840A:READ ATongueOKE I,A:NEXTBig smileEFUSR9=&H8400:U=USR9(0)Big smileATA 243,62,8,211,153,62,153,211,153,251,201

Save as MSX.BAS, run AUTOEXEC.BAS, and it should work. To start in MSX2 mode (screen 8), keep "2" pressed while booting the demo (and for MSX1 mode press the "1" key).

Arf, stupid smileys... Try again:

65 FOR I=&H8400 TO &H840A:READ A: POKE I,A:NEXT: DEFUSR9=&H8400:U=USR9(0): DATA 243,62,8,211,153,62,153,211,153,251,201

Ops, that broke the credits Smile, and the "2" thing doesn’t work either. To fix the credits, enter these lines as well:

285 POKE &H8403,8:U=USR9(0)
515 POKE &H8403,0:U=USR9(0)
520 WIDTH 32:RESTORE 680

And the "2" key, well... I think it is the easiest to just copy the original MSX.BAS file to an MSX2.BAS file and load it when the "2" key is pressed in the AUTOEXEC.BAS. You may figure that one out for yourself Smile.

515 POKE &H8402,0:U=USR9(0)
