PassionMSX - Editorial activities halted

When Mars2000 stopped his editorial activities for PassionMSX last month, the inevitable happened in a situation where one single person practically keeps the website up to date. Yesterday, the plug was more or less pulled officially, in what may be the last newspost ever on PassionMSX. The administrator (SuperCobra) doesn't see any fruitful present and future in MSX and thus can't be motivated to keep the website up to date himself. The current website and its content (forum, downloads etc.) will remain online however.

Whatever will happen to the second edition of the Passion MSX2 contest has not been made known (yet?). Two entries have been submitted (by TNI and Infinite), and PassionMSX has been silent about that ever since.

Sad, but unavoidable. I was suspecting something like this due to lack of news about the Passion msx2 contest after months from the deadline...

In my opinion, caring about the "Passion MSX2 contest" is no priority here (come on, guys!)- although it's also important -, but the decease of another main column of our community; it's not the first one, sadly. Some MSX meetings were promoted in France by the same webpage, if I remember well.

Let's do something about it: is there new blood that would like to take care of us in France? - The same way DemonSeed does here Smile - Just one person to manage a hobby website for so many years can be too much ... I myself had many stages in my life, regarding my hobby, my life: MSX. I thought I would leave the MSX scene in 1990 ... changing my SONY MSX2 for a Commodore Amiga 500 ... shame on me Eek! Until MATRA came across my life: now I am a BELIEVER!!!

It's like that: Internet keeps us informed, even if we "don't care" about the news.

Post Scriptum: DemonSeed has been the only one, that I know of(he told me by phone), who finished Beepertron ... We need more people like you STOP Keep going like this STOP Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

The contest is important to such an extent that the people involved would simply like to know who won. You can halt a website which is based on short term activity (which posting news is), but this was still going on as a long term thing. The contest closed July 1st. Halfway August Mars already stopped posting news at PassionMSX, that's about 6 weeks since the contest was ended. How hard can it be to judge two entries, which aren't epic RPG's anyway? I would say that, whatever the faith of a website, it'd be fair to at least close such contests in a decent way. If MSXblue takes up the closing part of that contest, ok, but at least it'd be nice to read that then.

As for French MSX users.. there're still places where to chit chat, or to read news in French. This orange/blue website here not excluded. LOL!

Obviously, people involved (we are all involved, but I guess you mean just people who participated with a game since they put much effort on the 2 games) would like to know what happened to the contest. But I guess PassionMSX didn't stop in such a sudden: they had theirs problems since ... who knows, and they stop now; it doesn't mean that they (he) discovered today everything is over; such things come from months/years ago.

The contest is important; the webpage is much more important.

"As for French MSX users.. there're still places where to chit chat, or to read news in French" Yes, they still have ... Do they/I have to wait to the last MSX webpage to disappear? ... PassionMSX was/IS A VERY GOOD MSX WEBSITE. And it is still a pity it is about to "disappear".

Do you get that?

Yes, the website news is more important than the contest 'unknowns', and the newspost above doesn't deny that. Smile

At the moment -and maybe I'm overlooking one or more- I count 3 French websites with activity: msxblue, msxvillage and the french section of MRC. So, it'll take a while before the last french website goes down. I can't talk for msxvillage and msxblue, but I can talk for mrc: as long as there is English news and French translators, there is French news, iirc we have two translators now. As long as there are French people who want to chit chat, a forum is easy to set up. I wouldn't worry about support for French MSX users if I were you. Even these hobby things follow economy rules: All you need is demand, and supply will somehow follow. Face

Let's put it this way: What if after the founder of MRC, Sander van Nunen, "founder of the website, was out of motivation and inspiration to keep the msx.org domain running" (Link) would have left the scene and no one would have taken this website back in 1999? Well, we would have PassionMSX, and MSXBlue ... And some others. But it wouldn't have been the same.

Anyway, I don't think we have to wait 'till there is only one MSX webpage to start doing something about it. Wolf, you are not the founder of this webpage (even if you were ...), you decided to continue what someone else started, and -wasn't it like that?- not long ago you said you couln't keep maintaining this website this way so you got some help(that's why I said "even if you were), too. I don't know how accurate everything I say is, since I'm not in the mood to look for all the posts about this information (I tried for some minutes...).

This is a nice place to stay, but it could have disappeared if some people wouldn't have done something about it. That's what I am saying; PassionMSX is not just a simple MSX webpage with some little info but a well developed website, and it is a pity it is going to vanish.

Thanks for the appreciation, dioniso. Smile
But honestly, it may be a little too much credit for me.
It was mainly people like wolf_ and Jorito who kept MRC going in the past years.
Hydragon and me are just new recruits to help out a bit. Wink

And yes, Beepertron still rules!

I'm not sure I can follow every word, it's late here too Tongue .. but a little history here is in place. The original concept was that I didn't continue what others have begun. When I joined the crew back in whatever it was.. 2006 or something, the crew was still large and active. I did not originally join to become newsposter but to do something completely different. It'll show in the new MRC2k1x (x being: I don't know, ask Jorito). When Bart decided tot leave the foundation, I took his place. But after that the biggest change took place: snout got busy with work, and very busy with private life issues. If he wouldn't find time and motivation to continue posting news, no one would, so I more or less just began posting news. It wasn't all overnight, it was gradual.

So, why did people like DemonSeed join? I asked, and I discussed it earlier with him on multiple occasions via chat anyway. And why did I ask for such people to join the club? (1) I'm studying at the moment, so I may face a few busy bits o' time, like I did just before the recent summer holidays. (2) There are times where I'd like to drop the whole thing, sit back and relax. Maybe do some game developing, and it'd be nice when MRC would continue without me updating it, but (3) most importanly: I don't think this website should be run by one single person for its main news, any website for that matter. You now see what has happened: Mars2k stops -> PassionMSX halts. I don't want that to happen at MRC, so I really want some backup here. We've seen it happen here too when snout dropped out from one moment to another, and that was in a time when he still did most of the news.

I think, with quite some certainty, that MRC won't just stop overnight. The English news will be dealt with one way or another, and as long as there are French localizers, it will be available in French too. Same for other languages, though Spanish seems a major tad more active than Dutch and Portuguese. (credits to Ivan!)

Me SuperCobra speaking. A quick word about the PassionMSX contest, this is an initiative from mars2k and I believe an announcement was planned on msxblue this fall. So i hope you'll have finally some news about it after all the wait. Since i was in the jury, i have done my job already by mid-july. I don't know what is the holding element.

About PassionMSX, it's just there won't be any newsposts anymore. The site remains open (lifetime hosting) forever unless a technical problem occurs. The big hurdle behind PassionMSX is the bilingual side. Posting news in one language is one thing, doing it in two is simply double work. Same with all the rest of the content.

Still, I appreciated that a lot!

Also, I appreciated to be able to download loads of hard to find demos from the site! Smile I'm very glad you'll keep it open!
