Okay. I will make a first draft for the wiki entry, and you will do the quality check!
Collecting all information now... :-)
Nice C64 ver. reference: Lazy Jones - C64-Wiki
And the earlier mentioned sid info link by MaSaXi: https://www.slayradio.org/sid_info.php?sid_tune=MUSICIANS/W/...
-edit: seems the STIL information @ SlayRadio is a bit outdated, this is the latest info (v72):
/MUSICIANS/W/Whittaker_David/Lazy_Jones.sid (#1) TITLE: Lazy Bones ARTIST: Hoagy Carmichael (#7) TITLE: Neunundneunzig (99) Luftballons ARTIST: Nena (#10) TITLE: Lazy Bones ARTIST: Hoagy Carmichael COMMENT: Same as the first half of tune #1. (#11) TITLE: Lazy Bones ARTIST: Hoagy Carmichael COMMENT: Same as the second half of tune #1. (#14) TITLE: Post Horn Gallop ARTIST: Hermann Koenig (#16) TITLE: Wild Signals [from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind] ARTIST: John Williams COMMENT: These notes were used as a means of communicating with the aliens. (#18) TITLE: Living on the Ceiling ARTIST: Blancmange (#20) TITLE: Fade to Grey [from Visage] ARTIST: Visage (#21) TITLE: It Happened Then ARTIST: Electronic Ensemble COMMENT: This tune was covered in the dance hit "Kernkraft 400", by Zombie Nation in 1999.
I updated the wiki article: https://www.msx.org/wiki/Musical_influences_in_MSX_games
Interesting finding: some of the tunes are played in two mini-games... maybe I missed some doubles there.
@ren: Nice list! We should check, if the information also is valid for the MSX game version, then add it to the wiki!.
Nice, I'll have a look!
Have you checked the info from STIL I posted as well? 'The Turk' matches more closely with Koenig's Post Horn Gallop (@0:16 and onwards).
And I'm not sure about the Underdog reference (nor the Carmichael reference (with some imagination sure)) And the Bronski Beat ref. I'm not 100% sure about either (wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by that however).
Note that in the C64 version the lobby tune has a 2nd part to it.
WIP (like I'm not procrastinating on something or something..): /wiki/Lazy_Jones
Since the LJ entry on the Musical Influences page would get kinda unwieldy, we can point to this page instead, where's room to put some more bg info <> C64 as well.
Hi ren,
1. "Koenigs Post horn gallop" comes much nearer than the "cavalry" reference. will change that!
2. hmm, for me, the "underdog" reference is one of the clearer ones... BUT! the Carmichael reference refers to the same tune(s)! and it has definetly the right tones in it, played slower. And: there is this obvious similarity in the name of the song and the game.... so I also would prefer Carmichael before "Underdog"!
3. I have to check for myself the following references, haven't heard them yet: Living on the ceiling/Blancmange.
4. Did not find the "Fade to grey" like tune in the MSX version. I think it was dismissed for copyright reasons, like the "Nena" tune ... what do you think?
5. yeah, the Bronski Beat is also a very doubtful one, agreed. leave it or delete it?

yes, i am fine with that. Will you copy the information from the main page and put in the link?
@ren: For easier identification and comparison of MSX and C64 tunes I added links to the YouTube longplays of each version, including jump marks to the specific mini-game / tune. Sadly, the Wiki link function does not support the YT jump mark format, see my request here.
But it works when you rightclick the link and open it in a new browser window (NOT tab!).

As I replied in the feature request topic, this is not a Wiki limitation, but rather a difference in supported parameters in YouTube's embed URLs. :)
While the YouTube video page supports t=TIME_IN_SECONDS
(e.g. t=5652) or even t=TIME_DURATION_IN_ISO8106
(e.g. t=1h34m12s), their embed client only supports start=TIME_IN_SECONDS
.
In addition to that, the embed client also supports an end-time after which the playback automatically stops, with end=TIME_IN_SECONDS
So, for example:
Gorby's Pipeline for the MSX - Name that song?
Hi, yes I mentioned that Blancmange reference earlier.
Ah yes, wow, quite some work? People can compare gameplay as well now
I was thinking myself of linking the (sub)tunes in the first table to the actual .sid subtune somehow. There are various web SID players available, should be possible to set something up for LJ / subtune linking.
I think it's fine to leave the uncertain/debatable references.
