So here's the idea: of course we all like (them) good tunes, and there's a lot out there.
So perhaps a nice idea to have a topic to share some tunes, or (preferably) a soundtrack you like. This could perhaps be a (sound)track you think is lesser known, but think is worthwhile to get known by a wider audience.. Smile

Allow me to set some rules. Anything goes, as far as it's related to MSX (somehow). That could e.g. mean: from the same era, from other 8-bit platforms, same/common sound chip(s), from the same composer(s) that also did stuff on MSX, etc. And, of course, also (sound)tracks from MSX itself are also allowed Smile

The main idea is being able to discover new things. But pointing (once again) to (the) great right-under-our-nose stuff is OK too Smile

At least mention title, developer and/or publisher, and composer (if known), and of course a link to the tune/soundtrack. YouTube seems most common, but of course SoundCloud, or any other service can be appropriate too. Please link to the best quality version if multiple versions are available. Mentioning different options is always a +.

If available, please also link to the VGMRips pack, so one could dl & listen to it via VGMPlay Smile

Bonus points if you make a nice informative post of it (with a nice layout), perhaps with some nice-to-know facts.. Wink

Please no flooding (in posting (sound)tracks). I think It'd be cool/best if we take this topic slow, one entry at a time, quality over quantity Smile Of course discussion is (always) welcomed.

Let's see where this goes.. (could be nowhere, but at least then I tried.. Wink) Id's are 'reserved' up to #999 (for now) anyway.. Wink (Remember to give your entry a succeeding id Wink)

In the next post I'll kick off with the first entry Smile

#001| Zero Wing (& Hellfire)

Developer: Toaplan
Year: 1989
Platform(s): Arcade, Genesis, TurboGrafx CD

Soundtrack composed by: Tatsuya Uemura, Toshiaki Tomizawa, Masahiro Yuge.

All your base!

Perhaps one could say these Toaplan soundtracks are somewhat 'frivolous' and/or cheesy/corny. I reckon the cheesy wobbly bassline (and/or (lead-)synth(s)) is/are mainly responsible for that..
But, so, well, yes, that's true certainly to an extend, but there's some difference between tracks, and they're enjoyable anyway I think. Just don't overdose on it... :)

Most of us will recognize track #01. Very nice (IMO) is track #02. #06, #10 and #11 are nice as well.

So the base(;))line melody could get a bit tiresome, but I think it's okay as long as you don't listen for too long.. :)

(YT version sounds better than the VGMRips mp3's btw.)

* * *

Much alike/related (amongst other Toaplan game soundtracks) is the soundtrack of Hellfire, also from Toaplan, 1989. So I decided to include it in this post as well.

This one seems to be composed solely by Tatsuya Uemura, and seems a bit less erratic/frolic than the Zero Wing soundtrack.

Track #01 is cool, #02 is quite fine too, #03 not bad either. The rest is okay as well :)

Enjoy! :)

Nice topic!

@JohnHassink I like the X1 Turbo PSG + OPM version most, but the X1’s PSG version is also really good and pleasant to listen to! Much better than the MSX version’s PSG actually!

I’ll post one or two of my favourites later :). For now giving you guys time to listen to the Sorcerian soundtrack because it’s quite a long one. But some good tunes in it! My favourites:

Lost Talisman - Underground Dungeon
Floodgates of Lucifer - Underground Dungeon
Cursed Oasis - Desert
Tower of Thieves - Depths of The Earth
The Wizard of Dark Swamp - Dark Swamp
Romancia - Azorba Kingdom (this one is from Dragon Slayer Jr! :))
Romancia - Ending Theme (this one too :))
Cursed Ship The Queen Mary - Aboard Ship
Heavens Gods - The Heavens
Heavens Gods - Harp
Water of Longevity - The Cave of Life
Ending II

Also, the MSX version, PC-Engine version, NES version and arcade version. Nice for comparison. The PC-Engine and arcade versions are nice, but the SCC remains the best! :)

Cool! Cool
Never gave Sorcerian really a listen, so that's in my queue now ;-)

@ToriHino: agreed, the Salamander soundtrack is great, listened to it a lot (already) (same goes for Nemesis 2 & Space Manbow) Smile I guess my favourites are Poison of Snake, Destroy Them All & Departure Again.
Note there's a discrepancy between the YT link & VGMRips link you posted. The former points to the MSX version, the latter to the Arcade version..

Perhaps a good idea to clearly sate in your post which version you're referring to (@all).

(@all) When a title has a shitload of platform releases, I don't think you have to mention them all. Perhaps naming the platform your referring to is enough, and perhaps some platforms worth mentioning... (I guess at least the original, and then you could also sum the irrelevant ones up with '+more' or something...) Smile Thanks!

What's also interesting about the Salamander soundtrack is that the MSX version lacks the awesome "Planet Latis" track. Still thinking about making an SCC version myself.

@ Grauw: I agree! But I love the MSX PSG versions too. There don't seem to be correct rips of the MSX FM versions. Sad
@ ren: Cool, I personally love it. And you said: "This could perhaps be a (sound)track you think is lesser known, but think is worthwhile to get known by a wider audience..". Wink
